A Student’s Quarantine

RECENTLY there has been some bad things have been happening in Indonesia and even in the whole world. People call it “The Covid-19”, a new virus commonly known as The Coronavirus.

Because of that tiny small virus, that can’t even be seen with our bare eyes, we have to experience a new situation that we had never imagined before.

There are lots of new adjustments that we have to make in our life because this virus has become a pandemic. Some of these adjustments are quite hard or even uncomfortable and some of them are fine and easy.

The first adjustments we must generally make is practicing physical distancing. This virus is extremely contagious as well as easy and rapid to spread. That’s why we are advised to practice physical distancing as well as staying at home.

Since we have to stay at home, students must also study from home. This regulation started on March 13th. On one hand, studying at home is boring, because we have to do everything alone. It is so different than studying at school where we are able to be with lots of our friends.

Studying can never be too boring at school. On the other hand, studying at home is less stressful because we don’t have to do a lot of homework or assignment.

In my experience being at home for these few months, at first actually I thought I didn’t need to go to school every day, I could actually wake up anytime I wanted.

But the fact is, I still need to wake up as usual and finish all of my homework as efficiently as possible, because all my teachers seem to be keen to give assignments and notes early in the morning.

Personally, I think my teachers are all diligent. I would usually wake up at around 7 o’ clock then I would try to find my homework for that day. At 9 o’clock I would go outside to stretch my body and at 10 o’ clock I would sunbathe.

My mom forces me to do it because she believes that the sun light is good for my immune system. After sunbathing, I will take a bath and go straight to my room and do all of my home work.

Sometimes, we would also have tests or online classes with our teacher using “Zoom” application.

The second thing I have to adjust as a Catholic is that we can’t go to church every Sunday as usual. Unfortunately, the new regulation also happens at the time of “prapaskah”, which is a commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This is the biggest celebration of the Catholic church and as Catholics we must attend a three-day mass called The Three Holy Days. Because of this pandemic, my mass schedules have also changed.

During the three holy days, my mom and I had to follow an online mass at home. It was something none of us had never done. With that in mind, we still tried our best to create a holy environment during the mass.

After approximately one month after the pandemic, in response to this pandemic as well as the regulation to stay at home, our government has given us another way to study from home which is to watch a new television program.

This television program started on April 13th, and is adjusted to our grades. I am a junior high school student so my program would generally be at around 9.30 AM to 10 AM. To me this is a very fun way to study, because we’ll normally study about our own country.

For instance, last Friday, we studied about “Ayam Betutu” a famous traditional dish from Bali.

As much as I enjoy studying at home, I really wish I could go back to school because I want to study with my friends and teachers. I also would really like to be able to go back to my normal subject.

Having said that, from what I can see in the news right now, I don’t think this pandemic will resolve any time soon. Not only the vaccine is still being tested, but it will also need months before it’s ready for mass production.

So, I guess we must still study at home for the near future. I really hope that this pandemic will soon be over. (Gabriella Sally)

Suka Duka Belajar di Rumah selama Pandemi Covid-19

BELAJAR di sekolah lebih seru. Bisa ketemu temen secara langsung, ngobrol bareng,  ketemu guru, bercanda sama guru, ga bosen. Asli, hal sederhana kayak gitu bisa buat kalian kangen banget sama sekolah. Masih ingat, temen bilang, “Enakan belajar di rumah! Bisa sambil dengerin musik, sambil makan, mantep wes”. Apalagi kalo dikasih tugas online, deadlinenya malam, aduh senengnya ampun-ampun.

(Jessica Tracey Purwito/9B-20)
